EXW (Ex Works)

The Incoterm EXW, or Ex Works, is one of the most basic sales conditions in international trade. According to this Incoterm, the seller makes the goods available to the buyer at their own premises or another agreed location, such as a factory or warehouse. From this point, all responsibilities and costs related to transport, insurance, and customs formalities fall on the buyer.

Seller's Responsibilities

  • Availability of goods: The seller must ensure that the goods are ready to be picked up at the agreed location.
  • Necessary documents: Provide the required documents for the buyer to take charge of the goods.

Buyer's Responsibilities

  • Transport and insurance: The buyer must arrange and pay for the transport from the place of availability to the final destination.
  • Customs formalities: They are responsible for export and import formalities, as well as customs duties.

Practical Advice

  • Logistics planning: The buyer should carefully plan logistics to avoid delays and additional costs.
  • Insurance: Although not mandatory, it is advisable for the buyer to take out insurance to cover risks during transport.

EXW is often used when the buyer has a better capacity to manage international transport or when they wish to have full control over the supply chain. However, it is crucial for the buyer to fully understand the implications of this Incoterm to avoid unpleasant surprises.
